Do Natural Remedies Help Treat Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

 Modern day women are facing period related issues more than our moms or grandmas. They’re very much occupied balancing their family, work, social life and all. Such hectic lifestyle may cause stress, anxiety, inadequate sleep, crash diets what plays a major role in suffering from irregular periods.

I can still remember the day we planned a 6 days trip to Shimla around few years back. I knew that my period was due in one and half weeks and I had enough time. The luggage was packed, flight tickets and other documents were ready, and the cab had arrived at the door. And then, “Oh no! It’s started I think.” I just felt like crying. It’s something like that you know this menstruation is going to ruin your trip. Only a woman can understand how depressed I was feeling then. 

The story doesn’t end here. On one unfortunate day in the school (I’m a teacher actually), when I was taking class, halfway through the class I could understand something was wrong. That was the fourth day of my period. As soon as the class ended, I rushed to the washroom. I knew that it was a bloodbath.

Now, I didn’t waste more time and visited a gynecologist. It was diagnosed with PCOS. PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition that may occur due to hormonal imbalances. It’s very common in women of reproductive age. You may be able to deal with it through some lifestyle changes and proper diet. 

Symptoms and treatment:

It triggers excessive facial hair, increase in weight, thinning of scalp and acne other than difficult period days and producing more male hormones. With increase in male hormones, you may also experience pelvic pain, high blood pressure, diabetes and more. Anyway, the doctor prescribed some medicines. After initial medication, I was suggested to follow a few lifestyle changes and to my surprise, it worked.

What are the lifestyle changes I made to deal with irregular periods:

Here are 5 changes:

Start exercising

Stop eating packed and processed foods

Maintain a balanced diet 

Drink plenty of water

Maintain a proper sleep cycle.

I was advised some lifestyle and dietary changes. At that time my weight was 82 kgs which was almost 20 kgs more than my normal weight. So, the first thing I did was, I joined a gym. Started having more fresh vegetables and fruits. Not only that I removed dairy products, refined sugar, maida, red meat, spicy and junk food from my meals. Switched to multi-grain and whole wheat rotis, lean meat and fish. 

Do you know PCOS also can effect on your mental health? Thanks to the abnormality of hormones.  You have to deal with anxiety, depression or some kind of panic. Painful acne, excess hair on face and body, weight gain, irregular periods, infertility may not let you sleep in peace. 

Here, apart from professional help, you need continuous support from your family and friends. Also some lifestyle habits like exercise, meditation, balanced diet and some self-pampering sessions can uplift your mood, enhance your emotional health and overall well-being.

    My daughter is suffering from PCOS and as you have rightly pointed out, lifestyle changes are the best way to deal with it. She works nearly 12 hours a day and her eating and sleep was irregular. Now I stay with her and I see that she eats healthy homecooked food and she has joined a gym. She had put on tons of weight.

    I am dealing with PCOS too. It can be truly depressing with all the extra facial hair and heavy flows to deal with specially when you are still in school. These lifestyle changes are perfect, if we can incorporate them, they will help in our overall health too… losing 2 or 3 kgs makes a huge difference.

    As you rightly said many women these days have some period issue. i too have had some pre menopausal issues and now i have shifted to homeopathy. Of coy changes in lifestyle & diet definitely helps.
